Hello, my name is Zach Speegle (center of the photo), I founded The Barracks Discipleship House in 2016. I was first inspired to start helping addicts when I took a young man under my wing to disciple him in the word of Christ. His name was Tony.
I remember meeting with him once a week and it seemed as if it didn't matter that we met weekly, there was no life change going on.
That's when I discovered he was addicted to Methamphetamines. I prayed about it and felt the Lord leading me to move him into my own home.
I felt as if the 2 hours a week I was pouring into him couldn't compete with the 166 hours a week that he was submerged in utter darkness. So, we moved him onto my living room couch for the next 3 months.
Tony wound up stealing $2,000 worth of stuff from me and doing drugs in my bathroom. I felt that I needed to provide something more structured and more submersive in God's word.
Over the next few months I felt that God wanted me to build "The Barracks Discipleship Home" a 9 month program FREE of charge for Men who struggle with Drug and Alcohol Addiction.
Since then, we've served over 130 men. We've seen tens of men walk in sobriety and break free from their bondage.
Our ministry has been serving men in need since March of 2016 and we've been operating out of a donated trailer home in Brownwood, TX since September 2019.
Recently, we made a post on Facebook stating that we were in the midst of building a new building because the trailer will no longer meet our needs and our desire was to house 20 men.
We've spent nearly $8,000 on materials and countless hours of volunteer time building this new structure.
It was brought to our attention, that we are not properly zoned.
A stop work order was issued until we can resolve these issues.
We've looked into rezoning, but there always seems to be another hurdle to jump over with the city. Even if we rezoned, it seems from my conversations with city authorities that we would still not be approved to operate our men's home from any location in Brownwood without some major changes that would cost tens of thousands of dollars a year to enact, which we simply do not have at our disposal.
There aren't any provisions for the kind of charity we are operating at this time.
Maybe we can talk with the city, and see how they can help us. I'll be putting in a request to be put on the Agenda for the City Council.
From what I can tell at this time, we would have to fundamentally change who we are in order to fit the current provisions of the city.
We are a Christ-centered home focused on helping men with destructive habits, lay their foundations in Christ and rebuild their lives for the glory of God.
We are not a medical rehab, we are a discipleship home. And after 7 years of helping broken men, I can attest that Christ does the trick.
One clear option is to find a new location outside of Brownwood city limits.
This will allow us to advertise freely what we are doing without repercussions, and it will also allow us to serve more men more adequately.
Marketing our ministry is critical to mission success. We cannot raise the funds necessary to grow and operate in excellence without promoting our cause.
We don't want to fly below the radar anymore. That does not help us and it does not help those who are looking for services that we provide.
On a positive note, Early, TX has opened their arms to us, and is willing to work with us. Of course, they have zoning laws too, but they have already presented a solution that may work. So, if we cannot find a property outside the city limits, then maybe we will move into Early, TX.
It was kind of ironic, but this Harley Davidson was donated to us the same day of the stop work order. And I didn't really know what to do with it since we couldn't build anymore. But, now I realize that we could use it to help us pay cash for a new property outside the city limits where people can leave us alone to faithfully continue serving men in desperate need of help.
Some may ask, "Why weren't you zoned properly from the beginning?" Well, you have to understand that we've never had the funding, support or resources that would enable us to do things exactly by the book. We can only use what people donate to us.
Plus, you don't know what you don't know. When you're an action taker like me, you don't sit around waiting for all the answers before you do something. That's how dreams die. I wonder how many students would have overdosed or committed suicide if I hadn't started when I did, with what I had.
I know this to be true because numerous students have said to me, "The Barracks saved my life."
Remember, I started this ministry with someone sleeping on my couch. Instead of waiting for all the money to show up before I started serving people, I just started serving people with the little that I had.
I have literally witnessed nonprofit boards sit on their butts 5 years prior to when I began, and to this day still have not accomplished anything. No thank you. I'm gonna get it done and figure it out along the way.
As we grew, we started to encounter the problems that come with success. And even though we had more revenue coming in, we also had more expenses to cover. We have simply been doing the best we can with what we have.
We never intended to violate any regulations.
But, now we're hoping to turn a new leaf, and if we had the proper support, then we could afford to do things more excellently.
It costs a lot of money to do things according to regulation. That makes it very difficult for average Joe's like me to do meaningful work on a larger scale. That's why John C. Maxwell says, "If your dream is big enough, you only have two options: Give up or Get help."
We want to serve more people. That's a good thing, but it brings about more challenges. The bigger we get, the more attention we draw to ourselves, and the more red tape people want us to go through.
So, we need your help so that we can continue to serve men and expand our outreach to those in need.
Hopefully people will see that we have faithfully served with the little we have, and we need your help so that we can take it to another level in excellence and service.
Although it seems daunting, the city has graciously allowed us some time to find a new location, but time is of the essence, and that grace period will not last very long. If you feel led to help us, then prayerfully consider how to do so, and act quickly.
We have our eyes on a couple properties, but they are priced anywhere from $189k-$325k. We need a place for sure where the guys can sleep, but frankly I do not want to be set back.
I'm believing that this dilemma will only catapult us into growth and expansion, so I'm praying that the next property will be totally move in ready, and we will be able to immediately serve more men, and seamlessly continue our operation.
Someone from the city had compassion on me and our work (I don't blame them for enforcing the laws, we have them for a reason). They gave me a cell number written on a sticky note for someone who might take an interest in our dilemma.
I called the number on the sticky note and the man went with me to look at a property for sale. He asked me how he could help. I said, "Well, if I had a down payment on a property like this, I might be able to get the bank to loan me the rest of the money." He generously said, "I can do $10,000".
So, we are now in search of a property that will meet our immediate needs and give us land to grow on.
I've already called some lenders and they won't even entertain the idea of lending our non-profit any money for the purchase. Maybe I'll find something, but in the meantime, my goal is to raise all the cash and not go into debt at all.
Below is a form where you can purchase a Raffle Ticket for $50 and be entered to win the motorcycle. If you buy several tickets, we start giving you FREE tickets (see details below).
We are a non-profit in existence longer than 3 years (7years to be exact) and we are legally able to hold raffles to raise funds for our ministry. By doing this, you will be helping us get closer to our goal, and allowing us to not only continue serving men, but also you will help us expand our reach and ability to serve them.
We anticipate that we will have to raise $200k-$500k in order to purchase land with buildings on it, move-in ready for 6 men and be able to accommodate our workshop where we make our candles and other hand-crafted goods used for fundraising. We also need a building on the property big enough to hold 20-40 people for bible study and worship. If you would like to be one of these donors, then please call us at (325) 430-5000
